Our Purpose

Humanity is living through an era of rapid and profound change. With nearly 80 percent of Earth’s biodiversity already lost, the genetic foundation of our global ecosystem is under unprecedented threat. Existing terrestrial seed vaults, though essential, remain vulnerable to natural disasters, geopolitical instability, and environmental disruption.

Project Transcendence exists to meet this moment. Our purpose is to unite a global coalition of nations, institutions, and innovators to design, build, and deploy the first lunar seed vault—a secure, off-world repository capable of safeguarding Earth’s biological heritage for future generations.

Our mission is clear: establish a resilient, extraterrestrial archive of life on the Moon before 2035, ensuring that the story of Earth can always be continued, no matter what challenges arise. We hope you will engage with ideas and resources in what may be the most important community of effort ever undertaken to preserve our world's plant and food material.

MISSION BRIEF

2019 Mission Deck from USAF Air University

Executive Overview — Historical Context of Project Transcendence

In 2018, following strategic discussions in Bonn, Germany between senior U.S. Air Force leaders and the leadership of the Global Crop Trust, Air University initiated Project Transcendence in response to a critical assessment: Earth’s seed vaults, including the world’s most protected repositories, remain fundamentally vulnerable to geopolitical conflict, environmental disaster, and long-term systemic risk.

The mission deck outlines the early conceptual framework for the project, emphasizing several core insights:

  • Global biodiversity under threat: The deck highlights that the stability of global food systems is deteriorating and that biodiversity loss poses a direct risk to civilization’s resilience. Seed vaults and gene banks are essential for safeguarding crop diversity, yet insufficient when confined to terrestrial protection strategies (page 2).

  • Existing efforts, while strong, are exposed: The Global Crop Trust’s worldwide network—including the Svalbard Global Seed Vault—is recognized for its extraordinary contributions, yet the deck notes that all terrestrial repositories remain exposed to war, sabotage, and both natural and man-made catastrophes (pages 5–6).

  • Need for an off-Earth solution: Because long-term safety cannot be guaranteed on Earth, the deck frames the Moon as the first viable location for a truly resilient, off-planet “lifeboat” to safeguard humanity’s agricultural DNA. The concept introduces a lunar seed vault, leveraging the Moon’s stable subsurface temperatures and physical isolation from Earth-bound hazards (pages 4, 7–8).

  • Technology and partnerships: The slides propose an international coalition—governmental, academic, commercial, and non-profit—to design, build, and deploy the system. Robotic emplacement, modular vault design, and solar or lunar-seismic (“moon tremor”) energy harvesting are highlighted as feasible near-term technologies (pages 3, 8–10).

  • Early-stage formation: The deck reflects the project’s nascency in 2019, with goals to establish core partners, begin custodial organization formation, and develop a global systems design challenge. A roadmap for construction and eventual deployment is outlined, signaling the USAF’s intent to catalyze international action (page 11).

Summary

This 2019 deck captures the dawn of Project Transcendence—triggered by strategic insights in Bonn and grounded in urgent global realities. It represents the U.S. Air Force’s early vision to move from terrestrial-only seed preservation toward a multi-generational, off-world biological safeguard, beginning with a lunar seed vault designed to protect the genetic heritage of humankind.
